List of Dragon Books I’ve Read * - especially liked
The Reluctant Dragon – Kenneth Graham This is the story of a boy who meets a kindly dragon, and they become friends. When the people of the town find out about the dragon, they send for St. George. St. George, however, discovers that the dragon is kind, and he doesn’t want to kill it. They have to come up with a plan. (Prequel and Sequel) by Brenda Seabrooke *The Dragon that Ate Summer One of my favorite books! This is about the adventures of Alistair and his dragon, Spike, that he found in the petunia bushes. Alistair has to hide the dragon from his family and his grouchy neighbor. (In the book Alistair broke his collar bone and was wearing a sling. When I first read this, I had my arm in a sling, too!) *The Care and Feeding of Dragons This sequel is just as good as the first. Alistair is spending so much time taking care of Spike that he doesn’t have time to do his homework, and his teacher is the dreaded Ms. Cassowary. Also, strange faces are appearing in the windows, and Spike is starting to breathe fire! Both of these books are very good and make me laugh (or at least smile). The Dragon’s Eye (first in the Dragonology Chronicles) by Dugald A. Steer Two children, Daniel and Beatrice, are sent to school to study dragonology with Dr. Drake. At first they are disappointed that they hadn’t gotten to see their parents, but soon they are intrigued by the study of dragons. They also have to save the Dragon’s Eye from Ignatious Crook, who, if he has the Dragon’s Eye, can control all of the dragons in England. (The sequel, The Dragon Diary, will be released Sept. 9, 2008) The Dragon Chronicles – Susan Fletcher *The Flight of the Dragon Kyn When Kara (yes, it’s my name in a book!) is summoned by the King because of her special powers to call on birds, she doesn’t understand why. Then she realises it is because the King wants her to call on the dragons. Kara is forced to call them. The dragon, who saved her life when she was a small child, comes to Kara’s call. Kara is horrified when the dragon is killed. She escapes and vows to help the dragons. This is one of my favourite books, but I liked Dragon’s Milk better. *Dragon’s Milk Kaeldra’s sister, Lyf, is sick, and the only thing that can cure her is dragon’s milk. Kaeldra finds a dragon’s cave and works out a deal with the mother dragon. Kaeldra watches over the draclings (baby dragons) while the mother dragon goes to hunt, and then the mother dragon gives Kaeldra milk for her sister. But when the mother dragon is killed, Kaeldra finds herself taking care of three draclings – Embyr, Pyro and Synge. She finds out she is descended from Kara, and can call the dragons at the agreed place, so she sets off to find it…but Jeorg, the dragon slayer, is following her. One of my favourite books ever. Sign of a Dove When soldiers come looking for Lyf, she is sent to stay with her sister Kaeldra who is hiding while trying to save the remaining dragons in Elythia. Lyf also has a special talent – being able to enter the minds of birds. When Kaeldra and her friends are betrayed, Lyf finds herself looking after Kaeldra’s son, Owyn, and a group of draclings, as well as a dragon’s egg. She travels from place to place looking for the sign of a dove, the sign of someone who will help the dragons. (I didn’t enjoy this book quite so much as the others, probably because it was told by a harper, who only told very briefly what was happening with Kaeldra. Still, if you liked the other books, definitely read this one). The Book of Dragons by E. Nesbit This book by E. Nesbit (author of The Railway Children and other classics) has eight dragon stories in it, including creatures that come out of books, lands where elephants are the size of rabbits, and magical lands. The Dragons of the Lost Sea Series: (by Laurence Yep) This series is based on a Chinese legend about an exiled dragon, Shimmer, and a boy, Thorn (and later on, a girl named Indigo). Shimmer and Thorn are trying to restore the home of Shimmer’s dragon clan. (has magic) *Dragons of the Lost Sea
Dragon Steel Dragon War (I haven’t quite finished this book) *The Dragon and the Thief by Gillian Bradshaw This book is definitely on my list of favorites! This is the story of Prahotep and the last dragon in Egypt, Hathor, who wants to travel to Nubia to search for other dragons. Prahotep is “bad luck” and has failed in any trade he has tried. On their journey they are followed and attacked by an evil magician. This book is serious, and also really funny. (Not that many books make me laugh, but this one did! This book does have some magic in it). The setting being in ancient Egpyt makes that period of history come alive as well. The Enchanted Forest Chronicles – Patricia C. Wrede Dealing with Dragons Cimorene, Princess of Linderwall, doesn’t really like being a princess. She runs away from home so she doesn’t have to marry a dim-witted prince, and becomes the princess of a kind dragon, Kazul. Cimorene would rather keep house for Kazul than live in her dull castle! Together, they begin to uncover the wizard’s evil plan concerning the King of Dragons…will Cimorene be able to save the day? (I enjoyed all the Enchanted Forest Chronicles – they’re all very witty and funny). *Searching for Dragons Kazul, the dragon, has been captured by the wizards. King Mendanbar also noticed that parts of the Enchanted Forest were burned. He wants to see Kazul about it, but when Kazul is gone, he reluctantly joins Cimorene, Chief Cook and Librarian for Kazul. Together they search for the kidnapped dragon, armed with a sword leaking magic. *Calling on Dragons The wizards are draining the Enchanted Forest of magic, and they’ve broken into the castle and stolen Mendanbar’s magic sword. Telemain, the talkative magician, Morwen, the untypical witch, and Cimorene, leave the enchanted forest to find the sword, leaving Mendanbar to look after the kingdom. (This is my favourite book in the series. Telemain always makes me smile). Talking to Dragons Daystar’s mother has given him the “Sword of the Sleeping King”, and told him to leave the house and not come back until he has found out what he is supposed to do. Daystar meets the quick-tempered fire-witch Shiara, Telemain the magician, and Morwen the witch. Aided by Shiara and a young dragon, Daystar tries to figure out what he’s supposed to do with his magical sword. *The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (fifth in the Chronicles of Narnia) by C.S. Lewis This book is the fifth book in my favorite series, and although the dragon isn’t in the whole book, it is in a part. I don’t want to give away too much of the book! It is about Lucy, Edmund, Peter, Susan, and their annoying cousin Eustace who are called to the magical land of Narnia through a picture of a ship. Prince Caspian, from the previous book, is a main character. If you are going to read this, I would suggest you read the earlier books of the series first (The Magician’s Nephew, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, The Horse and His Boy, Prince Caspian – although the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe was written before the Magician’s Nephew, the latter book explains about the creation of Narnia and where the wardrobe came from). *Dragon and Thief (first in the Dragonback Series) by Timothy Zahn This is one of my favorite books. It’s also one of the first science-fiction books I’ve read. Jack Morgan is hiding in a spaceship from the police, who are accusing him of a crime he didn’t commit. There he discovers a dragon named Draycos, a poet-warrior of the K’da. The two learn to trust each other in dangerous situations as they try to clear Jack’s name and save Draycos’ kind from annihilation. I absolutely LOVE this book! (I haven’t had a chance to read the others, but here are the names – Dragon and Soldier, Dragon and Slave, Dragon and Herdsman, Dragon and Judge, Dragon and Liberator (coming in May, 2008) *The Last Elf – Silvana De Mari (Also called The Last Dragon) This is the story of the last elf, Yorsh, in a world where people despise elves. Yorsh is helped by two humans. Yorsh discovers a prophesy concerning the last dragon and the last elf that would stop the rain flooding the land. I liked this book a lot. It made me laugh in parts, but it is also serious and sometimes sad. One of my favorites. (has magic) *Raising Dragons – Bryan Davis This book isn’t really about dragons…but it is! This is the story of Billy who is called Dragon Breath at school because of his scorching breath. Soon he realizes that he can’t hide the problem any longer, and he tells his parents, who reveal to him an extraordinary secret. (There are other books in the series Dragons in Our Midst, but I haven’t read them yet. This book is Christian). (Both are part of the Inheritance Trilogy) by Christopher Paolini *Eragon Eragon thought he was just a farm boy, but then he found out he was destined to be a Dragon Rider. His choices could save or destroy the empire from the evil king Galbatorix. Eragon, his dragon Saphira, and Brom a storyteller, are on a journey of adventure, mystery and suspense. (There is a movie, but I thought it was a lot more violent than the book and didn’t like it very much. However, I thought the book was very good. There is some mindreading and magic.) Eldest I didn’t like this book as much as Eragon. I didn’t think it was as exciting, although most people say it is a lot better than Eragon. Eragon is sent to be tutored in magic and battle skills by the Rider Oromis and his elderly dragon. Eragon’s cousin, Roran, also has many adventures while battling the Ra’zac. Eragon also finds out a shocking secret about his parentage (I always love secrets like this). I thought the beginning wasn’t as interesting as the beginning of Eragon, but I enjoyed the end. (Brisingr, the third book, will be released in hard cover Sept. 20, 2008)
