Kara At 10 Downing Street
"We (Kara and her parents) were invited to Tea
at 10 Downing Street on June 9, 2008 through the charity
Dreams Come True who helped Kara publish her book,
Tales of Cunburra and Other Stories
during her bone cancer treatment in 2006. We were told that we'd have tea with
the Prime Minister's wife, Sarah Brown. Kara was among 20 young people helped
by the charity selected to attend this celebration of Dream's Come True's
20th Birthday. Once our
group passed tight security, we entered the famous Number 10. We were ushered
upstairs to the main rooms where we had tea in the pillared room. We were
served a buffet of drinks, fruit, cakes and dainty sandwiches. We had the
freedom to tour the other rooms at our leisure. The unassuming outside of the
building does not begin to reveal how magnificent the house is inside.
After
tea, we were delighted to be greeted by the Prime Minister himself as his wife
was unable to attend until a bit later.
PM Gordon Brown gave a
short thank you to Dreams Come True and the families then greeted each child and
their parents one by one. Kara was able to give him a copy of her book and her
conversation with the Prime Minister was recorded on the official 10 Downing St.
YouTube site. Kara was also asked to share a bit about her experience with
Dreams Come True and her visit to 10 Downing St. for the video. We were amazed
they gave her so much attention especially being that she was the only American
in the group. What a wonderful experience! We could not have imagined all that
would happen during our time in England. God has brought so much good out of
what was a very scary time of our
lives."
